ICESat-2: Applications

ICESat-2: Applications

ICESat-2 Application activities coordinate with the Science Definition Team (SDT) to better understand the current plans for data products, formats, and science definition team membership and then communicate that information to user communities. The intent is to bring a broad range of users into the pre-launch mission work to increase the value/use of post-launch mission products. Understanding the expected product suite is critical in identifying the user communities and the potential applications for those communities. As part of the ICESat-2 Applications plan, we will also establish a community of Early Adopters that will have access to prelaunch data and conduct pre-launch applications demonstrations in collaboration with the SDT.

The following is a list of specific activities planned for ICESat-2 for FY12:

  1. Engage ICESat-2 project science and science definition teams through participation in weekly telecons.
  2. Two workshops to engage applications developers and decision makers who represent the ICESat-2 community of potential.
    1. First ICESat-2 Applications workshop held on April 12, 2012 was attended by over 60 people. Findings have been formalized into the workshop report.
    2. Joint ICESat-2 and SMAP Freeze/Thaw workshop to be held at the Alaska Satellite Applications Research facility in Fairbanks, Alaska Sep. 17-19 2012
  3. Develop documentation for ICESat-2 applications, including an applications plan (white paper) and an Applications Traceability Matrix
  4. Our efforts also engage the broader communities by attending conferences such as IGARSS and AGU and presenting early applications potential materials.

The overall goal for the ICESat-2 Applications program is to engage the community of decision makers who will benefit from incorporating mission products into their decision support systems. The initial focus is to engage communities that know and use remote sensing data products, to include the defense community. The first applications workshop will help broaden these communities and identify specific ways that the SDT can assist the user community over the long term.
